Essential Jesus Challenge
To take the Challenge, you'll need a Bible and we highly recommend you also purchase The Essential Jesus guidebook. The Essential Jesus Challenge guides participants through 100 short Bible passages following the storyline of Jesus Christ—25 from the Old Testament and 75 from the New Testament—over a 20-week period. While it is possible to take the J100 challenge without the book, we cannot stress enough how helpful it is to have the book in front of you to guide your readings, provide discussion questions, and give you prayers, reflections on each reading and ways to apply the reading to your daily life. Those who used the E100 book last year said it was incredibly helpful and made E100 both easier to finish and more meaningful. It's one thing to quickly read through a few Bible verses, it's an entirely different experience when you take time to pray, reflect on the reading and consider how it applies to your life today. So, please consider buying a copy of the book "The Essential Jesus," or at the very least, check it out from the library.
Finally, we want to stress that the best way to take the J100 Challenge is with another person or as part of a discussion group. At the end of each 5-reading section in The Essential Jesus, you'll find a page of discussion questions. Each week, read through the set of five readings on your own. Then get together with your friends, family (it would be awesome for families to form their own in-home J100 group) or discussion group to talk about what you've learned. When you get together, start by encouraging each person to share their questions/insights from the readings. Then, use the discussion questions to help you continue your conversation. You'll find that reading through the Bible with others creates a positive motivation to keep going and makes your experience of God's Word more meaningful. Anyone who was part of an E100 discussion group can tell you that it was a very valuable experience that made E100 much better than trying to do it alone. The J100- Essential Jesus Challenge begins at Zion on January 8 and lasts for 20 weeks. Our weekly sermons/messages will focus on the weekly J100 readings throughout the 20 weeks. We will aslo be offering several discussion groups during the J100 challenge and encourage you to join one or start your own group in your home, neighborhood or other location.
